The Great Fire of London

The Great Fire of London was a major fire that burned through the central parts of London, England, from Sunday, 2 September to Wednesday, 5 September 1666. The fire gutted the medieval City of London inside the old Roman city wall. It threatened, but did not reach, the aristocratic district of Westminster, Charles II’s court in Whitehall, and most of the suburban slums.

The fire started in a bakery on Pudding Lane, near London Bridge. The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is thought to have been an accident. The fire quickly spread through the city, fanned by strong winds. The houses in London were mostly made of wood, and the streets were narrow and winding. This made it easy for the fire to spread.
